Pick your poison

Photography is all about expressing yourself. And what I love about digital photography is the versatility it grants you as the photographer.  I think Hershey’s summed it up best “sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t”.  The fact is, some days I feel like shooting in color, and sometimes I don’t.  The reality is in today’s world we have plenty of options and especially if you shoot in RAW format.  Regardless of which format you use, it is key to own a software package that allows you to alter an image without destroying the integrity of the file. There are many packages to choose from; Google’s Picasa (mostly for beginners but can’t beat the price FREE); Apple’s Aperture; Nikon Capture; Phase One Capture; Adobe Elements 7; Adobe’s CS2,3,4 or  my personal favorite, Adobe’s Lightroom – and that’s just to name a few.   For those of you who are very serious about your photography, I would strongly point you in the direction of Adobe’s Lightroom.  If you don’t currently use anything to manage your files or to manipulate your images, then check a few of these previously mentioned software packages…..many offer a 15 to 30-day free trial.   Today’s reality is this: 9 times out of 10 the birth of a great photo often starts with a strong image that is later enhanced in some shape or form using software.  Pick your poison (software package) and get to know it well.  Do your homework and experiment a little.   It’s all good as long as you’re having fun! Go nuts.
