I had a wonderful time in India (can’t wait to go back), and I don’t know if it’s my crazy addiction to strong coffee or just missing the ability to eat whatever I want without worries of getting “Delhi Belly”, but I must admit it feels good to be back. In the coming days I hope to finish reviewing my 3,000 plus, yes 3,000 plus, images and share a few of my favorites. Let me give you a little background on today’s photo that was taken in Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. We had a very long drive from Agra to Jaipur and we agreed to just take it easy for the afternoon versus trying to do any real sightseeing. But I was a little restless, so I grabbed my camera and headed into the streets. This image was taken no more than a few blocks from my hotel near one of the gates of Jaipur. The locals greeted me with a warm welcome, but it was the children who sucked me in with their smiles and excitement. Today’s photo is of a family of nine….eight sisters and one brother (the baby). The father worked during the day so I missed the opportunity to meet him and it was my understanding that the mother had recently passed (or so it was explained to me by an elder living nearby). Not everyone in India is comfortable with a photographer snapping photos of them and their family. Some even expect compensation (which I try to avoid) but this family was very happy to provide me with their mailing address so that I could send them prints (I was told this would be “very important” since they didn’t have any photos of all of them together). Sometimes a print can go a long way to bridging the gap and for me it’s a welcomed opportunity to give back…;)
