Got a question? Just ask…

"Lady Slipper Orchids" (1/80sec, f3.5, 85mm at ISO 640)

I remember when I first started getting serious about photography I had all these crazy questions but nowhere to turn—it could be downright frustrating. A few years back I started reading blogs, and now I find myself following close to 60 of them a day. I tend to interact only with a few photographer/bloggers, but it’s in the blogosphere that my photographic education has evolved. I know how hard it can be to ask the simplest of questions, so this Friday I plan on doing just that—answering the questions that many of us are afraid to ask. So here’s the deal….you supply the questions and I’ll do my very best to get you an answer. Drop me a line on my blog (preferable), Twitter, Facebook, email, and I’ll select 3-4 questions to answer this Friday. Pretty straight forward and hopefully a little educational too.

i have a question – probably dumb, but here goes!
what settings do you use to get a blurry foreground and sharp background? thanks!

(and what i really need is Photography for Dummies – that lists looks and what to set your camera on to get ‘em!)

  2. When your at home. Do you keep your camera ready to go outside your bag, so you can grab and shoot if something in your back yard comes up to photograph. Or do you just keep it in the bag?

  3. I know that vision is more important than gear, but when the gear you have isn’t getting you your vision anymore, what or how do you afford to buy what you need? Not what you want but what you need? I’m a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom and my husband was laid off from work several months ago. Just wondering…

I have the darndest time trying to expose right on people that are wearing white. I’m always blowing the highlights in their clothing – but if I expose for the clothes, then I am underexposing for the face. I would LOVE to read your thoughts. Thanks!!

      hi,

As the lightmeter from your camera can´t tell colours apart, it turns everything to a solid gray to read from. If there is a black or white predominance in the photo, your lightmeter is being fooled.

Try measuring your hand (yes, the palm of your hand) with the same light that you’re going to shoot at, or buy a 18%gray card from a photo store, they are pretty cheap. This way you will have an accurate measurement.

I was reviewing your post production workflow from this post: http://johnbatdorff.com/blog/2010/02/18/making-of-the-image-part-2/

How do you convert from RAW to DNG?

Also I noticed that you don’t go into PS for editing? Is that right? What if you need to take something out of a photo?

When you do import into EfexPro – does it get imported as a DNG and comes back as a DNG?

Thank you for this opportunity to ask questions!!!

How do you determine your settings for the shooting conditions? If you were going to shoot an indoor event/gathering for example, what is the first thing you would do after determining the lens you want to use so that you get well-exposed shots? Do you have a formula or do you rely on your knowledge of previous conditions as a starting point?

Also, do you have a favorite resource book for learning more about exposure, technique or style, editing, workflow, and equipment? Workflow is another huge issue in itself – any help there would be GREATLY appreciated!

  11. When traveling…do you download your pics in your laptop, take dozens of memory cards, have a portable hard drive with card slots…or any other method?
Sometimes I can’t take my laptop (if it’s a hiking trip) and had a portable hard drive that wasn’t reliable (Wolverine 80g).
I am also wondering if you are going to have time to answer all this questions!!! ;)
    THANKS!!

How do you get your work noticed? Do you try to get into local expositions or contests? Use the web and social networking sites? Also, how big a part of your work goes into stock?

In this digital day and age, what is the best way to scan or convert my old negatives and/or prints in order to be able to submit them as higher res digital files? I have so many great prints that I’d like to be able to sell/submit but need them in a digital format.

    Thanks!

What’s the best way to keep skies from looking washed out? Whenever I try to do a landscape shot, either the sky is washed out or the surroundings are underexposed. I want my blue skies to actually look blue! Would a filter help? Or do I just need to adjust my camera settings?
