Where are you heading? It’s a pretty basic question but one that I think gets overlooked… a lot! As photographers, it’s so easy to get caught up in the creative process or even get distracted by everyday life that we forget to do a mental check-in. For me, it’s as simple as remembering to ask myself, “Is this the path you meant to be on? Are we heading in the right direction? Am I happy? Is my family happy?” This mental check-in is essential for the health of my photography and for my own sanity. Taking time to pause and catch your breath is a critical part of the creative process. It’s a time to reflect on your successes and your follies. It’s a time to confirm your present course, and sometimes to change direction. Often it’s a time to simply chart your next move. For me it’s about reminding myself why I love what I do and what it takes to stay on that path. I don’t want to kill my passion for photography, but at the same time I don’t want to be stagnate. Anybody’s path is bound to be bumpy from time to time. Heck, I’ve even been known to fall off course here and there, but in the end I always try to steer toward personal and professional growth. Happy sailing..:)

Good post! I am pretty much in the middle of a “mental check-in”. It is a difficult process. Sometimes you have to make a lot of tough decisions. I’m getting a lot of things worked out though, and am better defining the path I think I want to take so I should come out of this with a lot more direction.
Fantastic photo too! Is this in Montana?
Another nice photo!! I like the mood this image creates and the clouds look as though they were painted with rich color in the sky. It is such an interesting location as well. It makes me wonder where the photo was taken. The path of life theme and the question about where are you heading fit this picture well.
It reminds me of some of my vacations, driving across the country and taking in all the scenery along the way.
Karl,
Thanks for the comment. My favorite vacations involve driving across country…
What a beautiful capture, John. It seems to embrace those reflective and discerning moments in our lives that you talked about. Good post.
Lori…thanks. Where have you been…;)
Yay! A comment box finally!
This is a spectacular image! That sky is soooo amazing. This shot reminds me also of some favorite road trips across the USA…
I have no idea where I’m going while on this earth, but I plan to take some fabulous pictures along my journey!
Thanks for sharing!
