Wolf photographed near the Idaho/Montana border just outside Yellowstone

What type of photographer are you? Today I am a birder!

I’m a landscape/travel photographer by default but sometimes titles can get in the way from trying new things. Today, I decided I was a bird photographer….What sort of photography have you always wanted to try?

Old Faithful Photowalk Was a Blast

Getting set up for Old Faithful

The Old Faithful Photowalk was a total success. We had a great group, perfect weather, and an overall excellent time. Send me your questions for this week’s Q&A Friday, and remember I have one more spot available in the August Yellowstone Workshop.

Street Portrait–getting permission

Jaipur Man smoking Black and White by John Batdorff

Throughout the years I’ve had more than a handful of people ask me, “How do you go about asking someone if you can take their portrait?” I recognize not everyone is comfortable approaching a complete stranger with a camera in tow.

The Three Little Bears

Three Little Bears (1/320 at 7.1, 280mm at ISO 160)

First off let me say thanks for all the emails and comments about my True Americana post…it was much appreciated. We have two great Q&A questions today so check out today’s blog for more. If you have questions, or follow-up questions, please submit them, I’d love to answer them.

Badlands–July Desktop Calendar

July 2010 Calendar

I arrived safe and sound at my Montana cabin after an amazing drive via Yellowstone’s east entrance where we were greeted by a total of five bears within a 20 mile stretch. It was quite spectacular and although I took a few photos, I really wasn’t prepared to spend a few hours waiting for the [...]

Worldwide Photowalk-Destination Yellowstone

Scott Kelby Photowalk

Mark your calendars: It’s time to sign up for Scott Kelby’s 3rd Annual Photowalk this July 24th. This is an excellent opportunity for you to spend a few hours with fellow photographers exploring one of the hundreds of walks around the world. To find a walk near you, check out the Annual Photowalk’s official [...]

1600 Pennsylvania Ave

Protestor 2 (1/800 sec f/9.0 at 29mm at ISO 200)

While in D.C. I of course made the journey to get a glimpse of the White House. There’s only so many ways you can photograph the White House through a fence competing with hordes of people around you, police behind you, and snipers on the roof.

365 Sponsor Needed

Now, for the 365 update. Ok, I knew this project was going to push me outside my comfort zone and that’s why I decided to do this crazy 365 thingy. But I’m into day 6 now and I’m already thinking to myself “What the heck were you thinking?”

Mining old images

Wyoming (Canon 20D infrared, 1/800 at f/7.1, 25mm, ISO 100)

Now that I’ve amassed a photo library approaching nearly 75,000 images, I’m finding myself going back to review my not so obvious choices. The one sure fire way to look at an image in a new light is consider playing with some preset.

Stepping back to observe….

Coba Taxi

Whenever I visit an area with a ton of tourists I try to step back from the crowd and just observe. I think we miss a lot of photographic opportunities when we just follow along and get lost in the herd.

Back to Chicago

Goodbye Mountains

I’ve had a wonderful time here in Montana (as always) and look forward to coming back in the spring. I think I mentioned this before, but I’m planning on doing a Yellowstone workshop next year. If you’re interested drop me a note here on the blog and I’ll put your name on the mailing list.

The moose is loose

You looking at me?

I hadn’t been off road for more than an hour when I saw in the distance a cow and her calf working in and out of the trees.

The land of Jackalopes and Giant Spuds

Idaho Spud Drive-in

It’s been a little too long since I’ve taken a solo road trip dedicated to my photography. I hate to sound like a narcissist, but there’s a certain level of freedom that one enjoys on a solo road trip

On the road again

Fairy Falls

I’m going to mix it up a bit this time around and try to get into the park (Yellowstone, as if there’s another :) for a few extra days, but this time with a 500mm in tow. I decided to rent a 500mm and a 24mm tilt/shift to add to the list of lenses I’ve been meaning to try. I’ll keep you posted from the road via Twitter.

Bad plan, lesson learned!

Moulton Barn in Teton National Park

I’m back from dropping my prints off to the National Museum of Wildlife Art and I’m happy to report no broken frames..;)   As a reward for my delivery prowess, I decided to spend the weekend in Jackson Hole and check out the local art fair.  I must say there are some incredibly talented photographers that [...]

The winner is….

Teton Magic

I must admit, on occasion I’ll play around with filters. When the storm I was telling you about (yesterday’s blog) began to clear in the Teton Range,  the smokey red sun peeked through the clouds creating some crazy light.  Now, I’m not going to lie,  when this took place I said to myself  “I’m going [...]

The Mighty Tetons

Teton Storm

I’m back from my camping/photo  trip and I must say it was a blast.  I plan on posting  a few highlights from the trip this week so stay tuned.  Day 1, we began our trip by driving from Montana to Wyoming via Yellowstone National Park.   As always,  the weather was less than predictable, and when [...]
